Otherwise known as the Wyong Gold Cup, the event is held as part of a bumper two-day carnival at the Wyong Race Club.

Wyong Cup Day is a huge event, with approximately 8000 punters flocking to the track for a fun-filled day of entertainment and exciting horse racing action.

Run over 2100 metres, the Wyong Cup is a staying test and attracts a number of high-class horses who later go on to contest bigger events at the Sydney or Melbourne Spring Carnivals.

The Wyong Cup’s timing at the start of September gives trainers an early insight as to how their horse is travelling and allows them to develop an appropriate spring schedule.

The best trainers in the business generally have runners in the Wyong Cup, with Gai Waterhouse and Chris Waller having a presence trackside in recent years.

Waller has trained two Wyong Cup winners, with The Verminator winning in 2011 and Hawk Island taking top honours the year before.

Highlighting the importance of the Wyong Cup, The Verminator backed up his victory later in the spring when winning the Group 1 Metropolitan at Randwick before going on to compete in the Melbourne Cup.

The Wyong Cup was first held in 1978 as a 1600-metre event and has run every year since except for in 2007 when it was cancelled due to the equine influenza outbreak in New South Wales.

Wyong Cup Betting

Wyong Cup betting is very popular. The race is a huge annual event for Wyong, and thousands turn out at the tracks for a punt.

By far the most popular bet laid down on the Wyong Cup is the winning bet. Punters love to pick the winner of the Wyong Cup, as there’s plenty of bragging rights around the track for the rest of the day.

Another factor contributing to the disproportionately high amount of Wyong Cup betting is the lack of major meets in the town. Everyone turns out for a punt on that one day.
