Multilateral Wins 2014 Wyong Cup

September 6th, 2014

Displaying a keen turn of foot in the final straight of the feature race, talented Chris Waller-trained stayer Multilateral has taken out the 2014 Wyong Cup (2100m) from a fast-finishing Canny Ballad; stable mate Secessio holding on for third.

Jumping from the gates well, the Mizzen Mast gelding settled well within the pack, allowing the race’s early leaders to set only a fair tempo over the back straight.

Arriving at the final straight with plenty to do, premiership-winning jockey James McDonald steered Multilateral to a space between runners, comfortably spooling up and exploding from the pack to finish a half-length in the clear.

McDonald delivered a perfectly-timed ride on Multilateral in the 2014 Wyong Cup, and believes a Group 1 race is not out of the five-year-old’s reach through the Spring Racing Carnival.

“He thrives in the wet conditions and he got that today,” McDonald said immediately after the race.

“And even though he was stopping late he held on well.

“The Newcastle Cup and even the Metropolitan are not out of his range.”

Having now claimed an impressive total of eight race wins and six minor places from just 22 competitive starts so far, Multilateral has continued on what is fast becoming his most impressive racing preparation to date.

Returning with a somewhat forgettable seventh in a minor over 1400m on June 21st, the gelding out of Single Market overcame poor running position to finishing a credible fifth in the Spring Carnival On Sale 3.y.o+ (1500m) on July 5th before returning to the winner’s circle in the Bob Ingham 3.y.o+ (1900m) most notably on July 19th.

Punters who back Multilateral to win the 2014 Wyong Cup with were able to take advantage of impressive $5 odds.
