2015 Wyong Cup the Target for Canny Ballad

July 15th, 2015

Trainer John Thompson is thrilled to have picked up the training rights for talented stayer Canny Ballad, and has revealed he will set the five-year-old for a second tilt at the Listed Wyong Cup (2100m) this time.

Posting five wins and a further eleven minors through 26 career starts so far, Canny Ballad began his racing career under the guidance of the late, great Guy Walter before transferring to the care of Joe Pride for his 2014 spring and short 2015 summer campaigns.

Thrilled with the form and class displayed by the son of Dream Ballad in the lead up to his racing return on Saturday, Thompson is confident the conditions of the 2015 Wyong Cup; a race in which he finished second to Multilateral in 2014, will play directly into the strengths of the classy gelding.

“We are aiming up at the Wyong Cup so I’ll have a good think about his program,” Thompson told AAP.

“He has done well and ran second at Wyong last year.”

Thompson underlined two options on Saturday’s Rosehill Gardens race card for Canny Ballad’s competitive return, including the Listed Winter Stakes (1400m), but confirmed he is yet to make a decision on which avenue to take.

“I am not sure which race he will run in,” Thompson said.

Undoubtedly finding career-best form to date in his final preparation for Guy Walter, Canny Ballad finished second in each of his first four competitive starts before capping the campaign with success in the Listed Albury Cup (2000m) in late March, 2014.

Taking a few runs to find his feet upon arriving at Pride’s stables, Canny Ballad followed up his Wyong Cup second with a credible fifth in the Group 3 Craven Plate (2000m) on Epsom Handicap Day.

Having performed well in two Warwick Farm barrier trials leading into his return this weekend, Thompson is confident of a competitive performance from Canny Ballad, regardless of which race he chooses to contest.
